Odd Nordstoga is an award winning Norwegian artist who has been active since the 1990's, working in the popular-/folk music genre. I have listened to a lot of Odd Nordstogas music, in particular the Heim te mor-album. When preparing for Askoy Brass Band's participation at Siddis Brass in 2008, I came across I byen Samarkand, another of Nordstogas tunes. This was from the Pilegrim album. I thought it had an exciting mix of expressions and included it in the band's repertoire for the Siddis Brass competiton. Pilegrim was initially a commision by the Bergen International Festival back in 2005, based on lyrics by author Ragnar Hovland and Odd Nordstoga's music. -Svein H. Giske -

The beautiful song "Song at Winter Solstice" has within short time been highly loved by listeners all around Norway. It's performed by folk-rock band "Hekla Stalstrenga" who released their first album "Hekla Stalstrenga" in 2008. This album was nominated for "Spellemansprisen" (the Norwegian equivalent to Grammy) in the folk music / traditional music category. "Song at Winter Solstice" was released as single record in 2013.

This is a tune by Sigrid Moldestad (b. 1972), a Norwegian folk artist. She has based it on a warm and beautiful poem by Danish author Tove Ditlefsen. A text for and about love. Sigrid Moldestad won the "Spellemannsprisen" (the Norwegian equivalent to Grammy) in 2005 as a part of the group Gamaltnymalt. She won the price two years later, this time as solo artist for the record album Taus. Both times in the Folk Music category. So Take My Heart was released in 2012 as a part of the album Himlen har sove bort morkret.

"Why Not?" is the most well-known piece by Dominican Republic pianist/composer Michel Camilo. It appeared for the fist time on his 1984 album record "French Toast". He re-recorded it in 1985 for the "Why Not?"-album whoich is among his best-selling to date. The song has also been recorded by other artist like the vocal group The Manhattan Transfer. "Why Not?" ia a modern latin-jazz classic and this demaning arrangement for Brass Band captures the featureless and musical challenges of the original piece.

Tuba Libre! was commissioned by Eirik Gjerdevik, Tubaist with the Norwegian Navy Band Bergen and also widely sought after as a soloist and conductor.The work is the first major work the composer wrote for Brass Band.Eirik Gjerdevik recorded the work on his album "Eirik the Viking", a recording which also feature Stavanger Brass Band conducted by Morten E. Hansen. The album was released by Lawo Classics in 2014 (LWC 1064).

Chanson de Matin ("Morning Song") (Op. 15, No. 2) was likely written by Edward Elgar around 1889, originally for violin and piano. He later created an orchestral version. The premiere of this version in 1901 was conducted by none other than Henry Wood. Wood conducted the Promenade Concerts in London for almost 50 years and is considered the "father" of The Proms.The English composer Edward Elgar is perhaps best known for his Enigma Variations and Pomp and Circumstance marches.This arrangement was written during the COVID-19 pandemic for Askoy Brass Band's album "Gjensyn", available on Spotify and other streaming services.

An exciting arrangement where almost all players have a bit of the melody line. There are many opportunities to give individual musicians soloistic challenges. Any bandmember should find something interesting in this piece. It will be possible to add vocals to the arrangement. A lovely melody with great expressions.Our Last Summer" is a song by the Swedish pop group ABBA from their seventh studio album, "Super Trouper," released in 1980. The song is indeed featured in the musical "Mamma Mia!", a little bit shortened and with small changes in the lyrics. The musical premiered in London's West End in 1999 and is a duet performed by the characters Harry Bright and Donna Sheridan, reflecting on their past romance during a summer spent in Paris.The song is primarily sung by Bjorn Ulvaeus, with backing vocals provided by Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, the female members of ABBA. Their harmonies contribute to the song's nostalgic and wistful atmosphere. The lyrics vividly describe the memories of the summer spent together, including scenes of walking along the Seine River in Paris and listening to French songs. "On the run" was commissioned in 2017 by the tuba soloist, Joseph Cook, for his second solo album, "Debut 2". His only criteria for the commission was: "Write me something funky for tuba". The piece is based on a halftone interval combined with funky rhythms (and a hint of bitonality).

Christopher Bond provided a beautiful instrumental arrangement for brass band.
