Brass Essentials - An Study Companion (for all valve instruments in treble clef)

This book of 32 studies has been drawn from those Paul Cosh used as a student at the Royal Academy of Music, throughout his years as a professional player and as a teacher at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. The studies are divided into four main sections: Articulation, Finger Technique, Lyrical & Flexibility and Stamina & Technique and are drawn from those written by Arban, Charlier, Boehme, Brandt, Kopprasch and Sachse. Some of the studies have been re-imagined and edited to include new tempi and expression. There are helpful tips at the start of each section with most of the studies given suggested practice and performance tempi, although these are just a guide. Slow practise of the highly technical passages is vital to adhere to the overriding principle that every note counts. The Brass Essentials Study Companion can also work in conjunction with both the Brass Essentials: Arban Companion and the Brass Essentials: Practice Companion to vary your practice diet.

Deus Solus (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

Deus Solus (meaning God Alone) was composed for the Melbourne Staff Band's 130th anniversary at the request of Bandmaster Ken Waterworth. It is based on three Christian tunes - the 18th century hymn O God, our help in ages past (S.A.S.B. 47), and the more contemporary songs God and God alone (Phill McHugh) and Chris Bowater's Faithful God (S.A.S.B. 360). The work begins quietly and with a sense of the unknown, with references to O God, our help in ages past, alluding to the formation and early days of the band.

    Brass Quintet (Score Only)

Programme NoteThe piece relies heavily on a steady, energetic pulse, closer to the articulation in a jazz/rock context than that of the classical. In hoquetus fashion the piece starts out with the musicians throwing short motifs between each other, giving the music a playful, rocking character. In between the pulse-driven sections, there are also parts with floating textures, notably some moments where the sound of music being played backwards in mimicked. Toward the end, the hoquetus-music from the opening returns, and the piece fades out in a lyrical chorale.

Fanfares and Love Songs (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

Fanfares and Love Songs was commissioned by the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain for performance on 25th July 2009. Its three movements contrast the extrovert and lyrical qualities of the traditional brass band. The fanfare with which the work opens involves the whole cornet section. The second movement is reflective in mood, beginning somewhat pensively on muted brass, and building to an emotional climax before subsiding back to a distant pianissimo chord. The finale is a fast dance, which with a final recapitulation of the opening fanfare drives on to a breathless close.Suitable for Advanced Youth/3rd Section Bands and aboveDuration: 12.00

Keystone Kops (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

The Keystone Kops was a series of silent comedies featuring an incompetent group of policemen. They first appeared in the 1912 film Hoffmeyer's Legacy but it was the 1913 feature The Bangville Police that confirmed their popularity. The Keystone Kops were renowned for making mistakes, particularly with a great deal of energy and activity, and all done with a major lack of coordination. Carl Davis's 3-minute tour de force is a fine encore piece!Recorded on Polyphonic QPRL218D Master Brass (Volume Fourteen)Duration: 3:00

Joy Through the Ages (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

This work was written for the 125th anniversary of Boscombe Band, celebrated in November 2011, and is the title track of the band' album released in the same year. The music is celebratory in nature and is dedicated to all those who have served in the band during its 125 year history. The theme of the work is a song by Charles Hutchison Gabriel which was the favourite of the band's librarian, Gerald Whittingham, who was 'promoted to Glory' after a long battle with a brain tumour. The title comes from the last verse, 'When with the ransomed in Glory, his face I at last shall see, 'twill be my joy through the ages, to sing of his love for me'.
