At a time when we are being encouraged to survey the recent past, its title aims to catch a flavour of that spirit of optimistic vision which coloured the British psyche at the end of the Second War, at once heroic, elegiac, and confident. The concerto's three movements are arranged in a circular pattern around a reflective slow movement. At the heart of that movement is a Cadenza, marked to be played off-stage, where the soloist is surrounded and supported by an additional group of fanfare players. By contrast, the outer movements are energetic and brisk, at times heroic, and at times virtuosic. Also available with piano accompaniment.

The piece takes its inspiration from the VE Day celebrations of 1945. On 8 May 1945 the end of the war in Europe was celebrated in Great Britain. VE day (Victory in Europe day) gave rise to extraordinary public celebrations all over the country, from street parties to services of thanksgiving, to impromptu singing and community music-making. Contemporary reports mention Victorian ballads and Edwardian music hall songs, as well as the latest popular craze - the Conga. Festivities continued until dawn whereupon, finally surrendering to fatigue, the remnants of the crowd headed home on foot, long after the last bus. Some felt the celebrations to be inappropriate - much of Europe lay in ruins and war still raged in Asia. Almost everyone lamented the loss of somebody who had not survived. Duration: 16:50

The premiere of Prokofiev's 5th Symphony took place on January 13, 1945, with Prokofiev himself conducting the USSR State Symphony Orchestra. During the performance, artillery fire could be heard in the distance, celebrating the Red Army's victory over German forces and providing a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict. Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 emerged as a symbol of hope and human resilience. The 2nd movement is the Allegro marcato, a lively scherzo. The piece is energetic, full of contrasts and dynamic melodies, and embodies a spirit of defiance. It is one of the arranger's favourite pieces, and translates brilliantly to brass band for an orchestral transcription. £102.60Norge i rodt, hvitt og blatt - Lars-Erik Larsson
Norge i rodt, hvitt og blatt ("Norway in Red, White and Blue") was commissioned by the Oslo Fagott Choir (yes, that is indeed a gay men's choir) for a concert with The Staff Band of the Armed Forces in 2015. I was given artistic licence to write a more modern and somewhat 'eclectic' arrangement for this originally Swedish melody written by Lars-Erik Larsson, which became something of a national liberation anthem when Nazi occupation ended in May 1945 - then with new lyrics by Finn Bo, Bias Bernhoft and Arild Feldborg.After the premiere in Oslo, and a music video with Oslo Fagott Choir and The Staff Band, broadcasted by Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) on Constitution Day during coronavirus lockdown in 2020, I was approached by many to write an instrumental version of the arrangement for concert band. This version is now available through Norsk Noteservice. Reid Gilje has made this instrumentation for Brass Band.
