£54.99Slavonic Rock March - David Well
According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: 'I will be a great composer within 10 years time.'

"Cobalt" was commisioned by Modum Janitsjar as own choice piece for the Norwegian Wind Band Championships, third section in 2009. The Royal Cobalt Works of Modum were established in 1773 to extract cobalt ore from the local mines. The works were in operation until 1893. The cobalt was used in the production of cobalt blue pigment for the worlds porcelain and glass industry. To day it is a museum showing us how people at that time worked and lived. Most of the work was done by hand. There were also bad accidents with many fatalites. But in their free time there were dancing and drinking, and the entire piece ends with a dance-episode including a local tune.

£25.00The Garland Waltz (Tchaikovsky arr. Dan Price)
The Garland Waltz comes from 'The Sleeping Beauty', the second of three ballets by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Sleeping Beauty's theme is simplistic and focuses on the conflicting forces of good and evil through the characters the Lilac Fairy (good) and Carabosse (evil). The ballet's premiere in 1890 received more favourable accolades than 'Swan Lake' but Tchaikovsky never witnessed the work's true success outside of Russia as he died in 1893. By 1903, 'The Sleeping Beauty' was the second most popular ballet in the repertoire of the Imperial Ballet, having been performed 200 times in only 10 years. The waltz and other music from the ballet has been used extensively in film and television, most notably in Disney's animated version of 'Sleeping Beauty' and the recently released 'Maleficent'. Bach's abilities as an organist were highly respected during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognised as a great composer until a revival of interest in and performances of his music in the first half of the 19th century. He is now generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.Charles-Francois Gounod (1818 - 1893) was a French composer, best known for his Grand Operas, most famously 'Faust', written in 1859 and his 'St Cecilia Mass' written in 1854. Herbert L Clarke (1867 - 1945) is regarded by many as one of the finest cornet players of all time, noted not only for his amazing technique but also for his warm, lyrical tone. He has left a multitude of cornet solos as well as collections of studies which are still very widely used. He was a member of The Sousa Band briefly in 1893 and then from 1898 to 1917 where he was not only the distinguished cornet soloist but also became assistant director.The Maid Of The Mist dates from 1912 and is named after the famous sightseeing boat trips at Niagara Falls.This arrangement was prepared for a concert in May, 2009, given by Brass Band of the Western Reserve, musical director Keith M Wilkinson, in which Michael Sachs, principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra, appeared as guest soloist.

This beautiful music is from the end of Act 2 of the opera Hansel and Gretel by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921). The duet is a prayer by the brother and sister as they seek the protection of angels before falling asleep on the forest floor. The opera, Humperdinck's most famous composition, is based on the fairy tale by the Grimm brothers, and has libretto by the composer's sister. It was first performed in December, 1893.

A brass band arrangement was requested by Chris Lichtler, principal cornet of Brass Band of the Western Reserve, musical director Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. Chris has performed it many times with BBWR and it was recorded by them on the CD, Without Reserve!.

This march, written in 1893, was originally destined for inclusion in an operetta but after the composer had witnessed a spectacle called "America" in Chicago, which had as its backdrop a huge painting of the Liberty Bell, it was given the name by which it has become famous. Further recognition has come in more recent years by the adoption of the march as the signature tune for the popular TV programme, Monty Python.The arrangement includes several solos for a large unpitched bell which add aural (and visual) interest. It has been recorded by Brass Band of the Western Reserve, musical director Keith M Wilkinson, on the CD Slides Rule.
