This poignant Christmas-themed song was released in 1980.Although not originally intended as a Christmas song, its brass-band arrangement and refrain about wanting to be home for the holidays struck a deep chord with listeners.Stop the Cavalry has since become a seasonal favorite, remembered for its distinctive tune and heartfelt anti-war message.

This Gustav Holst piece contains three Carols: Good Christian Men, Rejoice, God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen and Come, ye lofty, come, ye lowly, (Old Breton Melody) with a little The First Nowell thrown in for good measure. It has been arranged here for the full brass band and has had light percussion parts added to complement. It starts with the band in full chord and then pairs down to solo instruments playing Good Christian Men monophonically. This piece has all of the essential elements of Holst's harmony and tension while retaining the joy of Christmas. It ends quietly and reflectively and works very well in large acoustics such as a Church building or large town hall.

This rousing fanfare prelude for Brass Band and optional Organ by Kenneth Downie is based on the monumental hymn Now thank we all our God, which dates from 17th century Germany. The arrangement is featured on the CD Classic Hymns for Orchestra - The Symphonic Music of Kenneth Downie (available here) as a symphonic brass setting. The arranger writes: 'The depth of the words is underpinned by the grandeur of the music, so I have tried to reflect the same regal approach in my setting for brass band.' Sweeney Todd Suite - Malcolm Arnold
Malcolm Arnold's ballet, Sweeney Todd, was first staged in 1959 by The Royal Ballet Company with choreography by John Cranko. The music was later adapted as a concert work and it is from this version that this brass band arrangement, by Phillip Littlemore, is made. The original concert suite lasts some 20 minutes, but this version has been shortened to a more manageable eight minutes.The first performance of this arrangement was given on the 22nd October 2006 at the Malcolm Arnold Festival, Derngate, Northampton by the Rushden Windmill Band conducted by Richard Graves.Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section.Duration 8 minutes.

DURATION: 5 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 4th+. The Gallant Sister was commissioned by the Spennymoor Town Band, and the title is a reference to the local wartime community hero Kate Maxey, who was awarded the Royal Red Cross award for gallantry and distinguished service in the field after being seriously injured in March 1918 whilst working as a Sister in France.
