The Witch of the Westmerlands - Score & Parts - Archie Fisher

Arranged for the Leyland Band’s 2010 Brass in Concert programme. This is a sumptuous, lyrical setting of Scottish folk singer-songwriter Archie Fischer’s originally up-beat song, with solos for baritone and cornet. The words tell the story of an ancient knight wounded in battle and dying on the battlefield who is healed by a mysterious old lady appearing from across the moors and swiftly vanishing again.  The original version was sung by, amongst others, Barbara Dickson who has said she is a big fan of Philip’s sensitive arrangement.

King Solomons Mines - Rodney Newton

This short concert overture was written for Robert Childs and Cory Band as part of the composer's contribution to the Brass Band Aid project. It is based on Sir Henry Rider Haggard's African adventure story of the hunter Alan Quatermain and his companions, and their search for the fabled lost diamond mines of King Solomon, in which they are aided by a local tribesman and obstructed by an evil witch doctor. The music is firmly planted in John Williams' Indiana Jones territory but, before anyone accuses him of plagiarism, the composer would like to point out that, since all the Indiana Jones films owe a huge debt to the romances of Rider Haggard, the wheel has turned the full circle and he is utterly unrepentant!

Tales & Legends - Etienne Crausaz

This three-movement work by the Swiss composer Etienne Crausaz reflects three true stories and fascinating legends from the Middle Ages. The first movement tells the dramatic story of the 'witch' Catherine 'Catillon' Repond (1662-1731). She was the last woman ever to be executed for sorcery. In the second movement, the famous court jester Girard Chalamala occupies centre stage. This jester, the last one at the castle of Count Greyerz, could make everyone laugh. The third movement tells the story of Count Michael. He went down in history as a spendthrift bon-vivant. His burden of debt became so high that he did a moonlight flit and never came back!
