Chicago (Highlights from) - Fred Ebb - Iain McKnight

The music from the 1975 musical by Fred Ebb, with lyrics by John Kander, is ranked up there with the best musicals of all time. Whilst the original Broadway production only ran for a couple of years, Chicago was revived in 1996. Following this new lease of life, the show continues to run to this day and has enjoyed over 7,000 performances on Broadway. In the first arrangement of its kind for brass band, this new 'Highlights from Chicago' has been made especially for the Leyland Band to feature on their new upcoming CD. Good Christian Men Rejoice - Traditional - David Holling

Good Christian Men, Rejoice (or In Dulce Jubilo) was of course made famous by Mike Oldfield back in 1975 and is possibly one of the most played Christmas tunes there is. In this arrangement David Holling treats us to a Rock/Jazz fusion style in the opening section before settling into a calm, lush cornet solo of the Sussex Carol with jazz-inspired harmonies and orchestrations. The final section brings back the original theme in a Lovatt-Cooper style big finish with all-guns-blazing to the end! This arrangement would suit all bands from Section 3 upwards (not excluding ambitious 4th section bands too!) and works perfectly as a good opener or finisher to a Christmas concert.

Hinky Dinky - Traditional - John Lee

Mademoiselle from Armenti?res (also known as Hinky Dinky) was one of the most popular songs of World War One and known in many versions, often with extremely dubious lyrics! The origins of the jaunty melody are not certain but it could date back as far as the 1830's and may be a French military tune. The instructions on 'standing' and 'sitting' are intended as a guide only and should be adapted to suit the needs and athleticism of individual bands! A perfect addition to a band's repertoire in this WWI Centenary year.

Punchinellie - William Rimmer - Jonathan Bates

Kick start your programme with music from the Brass Band march king???of sorts! The opening bars of 'Punchinello" are amongst the most famous written in any march, however what follows them in this arrangement will certainly raise a few eyebrows and chuckles from your audience. The brilliance of William Rimmer descends into the comedy tune of the famous elephant (& your trombonists are let loose with the trunk calls!). An awesome, tongue in cheek arrangement that would suit both concerts & entertainments contests (watch out for the odd weasel popping up too!).

Off Duty - John Dankworth - Len Jenkins

The late John Dankworth (1927-2010) made a string of recordings in the 1960s that have since come to be regarded as some of the finest British jazz of their time. Amongst these is his composition 'Off Duty' which was recorded in the 1960s when the influence of pop and rock on jazz was at its height and instruments such as the bass guitar were beginning to be incorporated into jazz's vocabulary. At this time and almost subconsciously, a Dankworth 'pop' style also evolved. This was a balanced marriage between jazz and pop which is here demonstrated in 'Off Duty' thanks to the ingenious and original orchestration by John Dankworth, and the faithful arrangement for Brass Band by one of his fans, Len Jenkins. The title is interesting as John loved to play with words. 'Off Duty' could mean relaxing away from work, but could also carry the implication of something not attracting taxation.... a sort of 'duty-free'. About the same time, the Dave Brubeck Quartet produced the seminal 'Take Five'... so could this be John's take on that title, suggesting a short break? Which meaning fits best for you? The piece would best suit the capabilities of a brass band playing at the standard of Third Section or above.

Carol from Boda - Traditional - Maurice Forslund

Good, different tunes are always welcomed by brass bands around Christmas time, so we asked our colleague Maurice Forslund if there were any Carols in Sweden that he would like to arrange for us. He has come back with "Carol from Boda" which we have also titled in Swedish and Norwegian to reflect brass band interest in those countries. The tune is traditional and known as 'Chorale from Boda'. It is one of the settings for the Advent Carol "Prepare the Way, O Zion", (Bereden vag for Herran ??" Swedish, or Rydd vei for Herrens komme ??" Norwegian). These words are typical of the period when they were written and could be updated to suit modern ears, so starting with this excellent melody, some new words would be good from the lyricists amongst you.....This piece is graded in the range 'easy' to 'intermediate' and is well within the capabilities of most bands looking for something different.

Savoy Christmas Medley - Traditional - Len Jenkins based on an original arrangement by Debroy Somers

The Savoy Christmas Medley is a well-known and often played piece originally arranged from traditional music by Debroy Somers a big-band bandleader in the 1920's. William Henry (Debroy) Somers was an ex-army bandmaster who formed the Savoy Orpheans dance band, resident at the famous Savoy Hotel between 1923 and 1927. Whilst there are several editions of this music for full Brass Band, this latest arrangement has been tailored to suit a brass quintet with optional percussion. In many cases the availability of players around the festive season, or the space to accommodate a full band in some of the venues for Christmas engagements or for fundraising, means that a Quintet can be the preferred option. In order to achieve a good Quintet arrangement, it is necessary to achieve the same quality and diversity of sound as a full band but within a smaller group. A challenging objective which we believe has been achieved in this publication. In common with our developing practice, the arrangement is scored for both Brass Band and Concert Brass instruments.
