An American Tale - Dan Price

Written as the finale of the Cory Band's programme at the Brass in Concert Championships in November 2008, An American Tale is a musical tribute to the American Civil War. The work includes 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic', 'The Girl I Left Behind', 'Kingdom Come', 'Yankee Doodle Dandy', 'The Soldiers Return', 'Turkey in the Straw' and concludes with 'Amazing Grace' - a song synonymous with slavery and selected to conclude the work as a reflection of the war's primary goal. Each of the songs is scored in a psuedo-compositional style of an American composer including John Philip Sousa, Aaron Copland, Charles Ives and Leonard Bernstein.

Postcard from Mexico - H. Snell

I wrote Postcard from Mexico for a BBC TV contest, because I urgently needed a finisher to provide an exciting and powerful end to the programme. PFM did the trick and to my surprise immediately became popular with bands and audiences. I evoked the atmosphere of Mexican music with nods towards Aaron Copland, Chavez and Ginastera. However the responsability for most of it, particularly the rhythmic difficulties and the unusual drunken middle section, must be laid at my door. We grade it 2 and 3 because, while difficult, so many bands love to tangle with its problems.

Fanfare from Sinfonietta - Janacek arr Christopher Mowat

Adapted for flexible ensemble and timpani 4 trumpets in Bb plus 3 optional trumpets in Bb • 2 euphoniums or horns • 2 trombones or bass trumpets and timpaniParts are provided also for horn in Eb, trombones in treble clef and Eb bass."...The fanfare was commissioned in 1926 by the Czech gymnastic organisation, Sokol, and later became the opening movement of his most popular orchestral work. The piece, lasting two minutes, is built around brief repeated phrases that evolve through a series of short sections to an electrifying climax…This piece is both aurally and visually stunning and rivals Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' as the most impressive of its genre."
