Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare - Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss (1864—1949) composed his Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare (Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare) in 1924 for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Scored for 8 horns, 6 trumpets, 6 trombones, 2 tubas and 2 timpani, the fanfare opened the orchestra’s inaugural benefit ball to raise money for the musicians' pension fund. It is still performed each year. This arrangement for full brass band and timpani would work well with the cornets and trombones stood around the back of the band in a semi-circle formation, with the flugel, tenor horns, baritone(s), euphoniums and basses sat ’inside’ (although conductors should beware of any balance issues presented by this setup!)Also available to purchase in print from(external webpage, opens in new window)

    Concert Prelude - James McFadyen

A lively concert opener by the pen of James McFadyen. Concert Prelude is in binary form and is in the style of a fanfare of two contrasting tones; the main theme is robust and strong, whilst the 2nd theme is light and playful.Although not a difficult piece, the accompanying vamp performed by most of the band has a particular set of articulations, that on first glance may seem awkward. Conductors will enjoy translating the articulated rhythm to their band, thus increasing their on-going development and performing Concert Prelude in a way that replicates the energy and excitement the composer intends.
