Just As I Am - Wilfred Heaton

Just as I am is a setting of the Charlotte Elliott poem of the same name. In effect it is a miniature tone poem though interestingly both times we hear the tune Heaton doesn't include the final phrase. Thus it is a piece that could be said to leave questions rather than provide answers.

JUST AS I AM (Brass Band Set) - Wilfred Heaton

A typically dramatic 'classic' by Heaton. Published in 1947 but written many years before, this timeless composition is more than 'just a hymn setting' - more a miniature Tone Poem of real Heaton intensity. Immensely popular for both SA and 'contesting' bands and featured on no less than 6 recordings in this catalogue.

Salvation Army Classics Series Numbers 17-20 - Charles Skinner, Albert Jakeway, Eric Ball

    17. March - Amsterdam Congress (Charles Skinner)This march was written for the Dutch Annual Bandsman's Congress, and is based on the theme well known on the continent as well as in this country, God is love. Published in 1951, it is melodic throughout and easy to play. 18. Meditation - Thine Alone (Charles Skinner)The expressive tune Misericordia is used for this meditation first published in 1959. It represents the sentiments of four verses of Frances Ridley Havergal's classic hymn, as follows, Just as I am, without one plea; Just as I am, and waiting not; Just as I am, though tossed about, and the final verse of surrender: Just as I am, thy love unknownHas broken every barrier down, Now to be thine, yea, thine alone,O Lamb of God, I come! 19. Love Divine - Ave Verum (arr. Albert Jakeway)A band arrangement of Mozart's beautiful Ave Verum set to the well-known verses, Love divine, all loves excelling. This setting was originally published in 1945. 20. Meditation - Hold thou my hand (Eric Ball)This piece, published in 1941, is suitable for use in devotional meetings, quite easy to play - although giving scope for very expressive treatment. The song which is the basis of the meditation is one of trust in our Lord's presence in all circumstances. The words of the first verse are:Hold thou my hand! so weak am I and helpless,I dare not take one step without thy aid;Hold thou my hand! for then, O loving Saviour,No dread of ill shall make my soul afraid.

Aubade - Dawn Songs of the Fabulous Birds - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Commissioned by The Norwegian Band Federation for The European Brass Band Championship 2003, in Bergen, Norway (Third edition)I remember as a kid the very early morning wake-up ceremonies caused by Seagulls having a "party" outside our home. Very few would describe it as beautiful, particularly not at 4:30 in the morning...But by listening carefully to birds I was fascinated by their diversity and musical language: they dont sing tunes or long phrases, they rather make sounds and signals, based on short motives.Aubade is based on musical pictures of the imaginary birds: the creatures with wings that exists only in myths and legends. The whole story starts with a Baritone-cadenza that evoke all the sleeping creatures. Very soon they all start to sing their songs in one way or another. The composition has a burlesque scherzo-character including slow espressive intersections. Traditional elements like melody and harmony is combined with extensive sounds and textural effects created by use of multiple muting, singing and playing at the same time.I am not too concerned about having a program for the piece. I just know that by thinking of the unheard dragon-songs, griffin-songs, the sound of the dodo, my creativity was stimultated. As a piece of music, Aubade follows its own rules based on well-known elements like melodies, arpeggio-figures, harmonies, rhythms, variations and recapitulation of ideas.- Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen -
