Good Christian Men Rejoice - Traditional - David Holling

Good Christian Men, Rejoice (or In Dulce Jubilo) was of course made famous by Mike Oldfield back in 1975 and is possibly one of the most played Christmas tunes there is. In this arrangement David Holling treats us to a Rock/Jazz fusion style in the opening section before settling into a calm, lush cornet solo of the Sussex Carol with jazz-inspired harmonies and orchestrations. The final section brings back the original theme in a Lovatt-Cooper style big finish with all-guns-blazing to the end! This arrangement would suit all bands from Section 3 upwards (not excluding ambitious 4th section bands too!) and works perfectly as a good opener or finisher to a Christmas concert.

Postcard from Mexico - H. Snell

I wrote Postcard from Mexico for a BBC TV contest, because I urgently needed a finisher to provide an exciting and powerful end to the programme. PFM did the trick and to my surprise immediately became popular with bands and audiences. I evoked the atmosphere of Mexican music with nods towards Aaron Copland, Chavez and Ginastera. However the responsability for most of it, particularly the rhythmic difficulties and the unusual drunken middle section, must be laid at my door. We grade it 2 and 3 because, while difficult, so many bands love to tangle with its problems.

Rhapsody on Overturian Themes - Christian Overhead

?'Rhapsody of Overturian Themes?' is an innovative concert programme/first half finale which builds its foundations from a broad collection of favoured classics, with references including:La Carnaval Romain – Hector BerliozLe Roi d’Ys – Edouard LaloThe Marriage of Figaro – Wolfgang Amadeus MozartWilliam Tell – Gioachino RossiniLight Cavalry & Tantalusqualen – Franz von Suppe1812 – Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyLa Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny) – Giuseppe VerdiThe work uses inventive means to link the references, enabling it to present itself as an individual work with just momentary hints of the fragments passing almost before the ear realises. It has an upbeat side to its personality, bringing forth a modern sound to complement the classical interludes. The piece was originally written to make an impact in an entertainment competition programme, working extremely well as an exciting ?'finisher?'.Through combining new sounds with classically familiar melodies, ?'Rhapsody on Overturian Themes?' is a feature piece which can find its worthy place in the concert programme of a championship section (or upper level 1st section) band.

    Faust - Phillip Littlemore

Charles Gounod was given to extended bouts of professional lethargy, particularly when personal matters weighed heavily on his mind. So it was in 1869, when he struggled to meet the demands for the Paris revival of his opera Faust , written had been written some 10 years earlier. His original opera had met with both favourable reviews, including one from Berlioz, and a few harsh ones too—including a noteable one from Wagner. Despite some other early negative reviews, the opera grew in stature culminating in its Paris revival. As with French operatic tradition, a 15-minute ballet was inserted into Act V. However, the ballet music was almost not written—not by Gounod at least—as he was reluctant to put pen to paper. He asked the young Camille Saint-Sa?ns to pen something instead. Saint-Sa?ns agreed on the understanding that should Gounod write something suitable, he would replace it if he wished. According to Saint-Sa?ns he heard nothing more of it and never wrote a note! The ballet music appears in the Walpurgis Night revelries where legendary and heroic characters dance to music that is curiously uplifting and bouyant until the finale, also known as Phyn?’s Dance , where ominous sounds of wild and wicked celebrations from the underworld can be heard. This arrangement of the finale is a fitting piece for either a concert finisher or an encore. Item Code: TPBB-071 Duration: 2'30" Grade Suitable for all
