    Passacaglia in C Minor - Bach, J.S.

Johann Sebastian Bach - for me, the supreme musician - left no markings or directions of any kind on this magnificent work for organ, as was normal for those times. Cconstantly full of interest for the player and the listener, I have 'organised' the music with dynamics, phrasings and tempi according to my own judgement in order to facilitate an ensemble performance - the same process naturally used by all performers, from Bach to the present day. This version offers satisfying challenges for all parts of the Band.

Pavane for a Dead Princess - Ravel, M.

The first of Ravel's compositions to achieve success, the effect the composer intended is light and flowing, not, as Ravel once complained, "a dead pavane for a princess". For those interested in these things, the word "dead" of the title is a mistranslation. The French word here is "d?functe" which can, as in English mean "dead", but in this particlar context means "of a former time". "Pavane for a Princess of an Ancient Time" is much more accurate. No more corpses, please !

    Perpetuum Mobile - Strauss, J.

A little concerto for orchestra... in this arrangement for band... this is a glass of freshly poured champagne every time the music changes direction. Irresistible!

Perpetuum Mobile (Novacek) - Novacek, Ottakar

Originally for violin, this a brilliant showpiece for band. When Foden's played it with Bram Tovey at Bridgewater Hall, the Brass Herald magazine wrote - the audience was reminded of the genius of the arrangements of Howard Snell.

Pines of Rome (Complete Version), The - Respighi, O.

A NEW EDITION is now in preparation and will be issued at the British Brass Band Championships on October 10th 2015. See NIGEL and MARY DURNO at the JUST MUSIC stand, where it will be available for inspection and for sale. The arranger has made some very small revisions and corrections and is confident that this new presentation will be very welcome. It can now be ordered on this site as usual, but delivery will be held until the new edition is available. The manuscript version is now withdrawn.Pines of the Villa Borghese - Children are at play in the pine groves of Villa Borghese; they dance round in circles. They play at soldiers, marching and fighting, excited by their own cries, they come and go in swarms like swallows in the evening. The Pines close to a Catacomb - Suddenly the scene changes -- we see the shades of the pine trees fringing the entrance to a catacomb. From the depth rises the sound of a mournful chant, floating through the air like a solemn hymn, and gradually and mysteriously dispersing. The Pines of the Gianicolo. The evening air is warm: the pine-trees of the Janiculum hill stand distinctly outlined in the clear light of the full moon as it looks out over the city of Rome below. A nightingale is heard singing.Pines of the Appian Way - It's a misty dawn on the Appian Way, solitary pine trees guarding the landscape. The muffled, marching tread of footsteps becomes louder and louder. Trumpets sound and, in the brilliance of the newly-risen sun, a consular army marches forth along The Sacred Way, finally ascending in triumph to the Capitol to celebrate "A Triumph."

    Pomp & Circumstance March No 5 - Elgar, E.

After the success of the first March, Elgar continued the series with four more excellent compositions that are all arguably more interesting than the first. Number 5 is a thoroughly invigorating piece of ceremonial music, completely undeserving of being in the shade of its famous antecedent.

Postcard from Mexico - H. Snell

I wrote Postcard from Mexico for a BBC TV contest, because I urgently needed a finisher to provide an exciting and powerful end to the programme. PFM did the trick and to my surprise immediately became popular with bands and audiences. I evoked the atmosphere of Mexican music with nods towards Aaron Copland, Chavez and Ginastera. However the responsability for most of it, particularly the rhythmic difficulties and the unusual drunken middle section, must be laid at my door. We grade it 2 and 3 because, while difficult, so many bands love to tangle with its problems.

Postcard from Riddings, A (The Two Windmills) - H. Snell

This is very much a lively concert overture. Written to a commission from the Riddings Band, a pair of windmills... named 'Sarah and James' after the owner and his wife... were a notable landmark until burned down in suspicious circumstances and later demolished. Nothing more descriptive than rather circular musical motives connect these with the music. More in tune with the Shostakovitch Festival Overture or Bernstein's Candide Overture than the Derbyshire countryside!Other products you may be interested in...TitleComposer/AuthorCategory/ScoringPriceCandide OvertureBernstein, L.?39.50Postcard from MexicoH. Prelude and Liebestod (Tristan) - Wagner, R.

The beginning and end of Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde are two of the most frequently played of the composer's operatic excerpts in orchestral concerts. Following in the footsteps of Alexander Owen who produced an arrangement of the Prelude alone at the turn of the 19th to 20th century, with the capabilities of Bands being now so much further advanced I took up the challenge of a version for our times together with Isolde's broken-hearted Song of Death that closes the opera.Glorious music, that is still 'modern' today in painting the romance of the title characters. Difficult, yes, but rewarding, absolutely.
