Ellan Vannin (Traditional Isle of Man) - Traditional

While this melody is not the Island's National Anthem, it can be called it's National Song. (Ellan Vannin in Manx for the Isle of Man.) I arranged this as a surprise encore to my programme for what turned out to be last Granada 'Band of the Year' Contest, in 1987. (I won with Foden, by the way.) Anyone who has experienced the fervour which this small Celtic/Norse nation puts into its singing will know the force of their pride and patriotism ! Yindyssagh ! (Wonderful !)

Old Chalet, The (Traditional Switzerland) - H. Snell

Alpine sonorities and melodies are mixed together here from such diverse sources as the alpenhorn, via Brahms, but basically from a lovely traditional melody "High up on the mountain, there was an old chalet". In fact the melody is current well outside Switzerland and can be found equally in the Auvergne in central France. The offstage alpenhorn parts can as easily be played on a euphonium, without vibrato of course. This piece has never failed to hold the audience' attention for the full 6 or 7 minutes (depending on the performance). It is realtively easy to play and simply needs a little organisation of the groups of players.

Carol from Boda - Traditional - Maurice Forslund

Good, different tunes are always welcomed by brass bands around Christmas time, so we asked our colleague Maurice Forslund if there were any Carols in Sweden that he would like to arrange for us. He has come back with "Carol from Boda" which we have also titled in Swedish and Norwegian to reflect brass band interest in those countries. The tune is traditional and known as 'Chorale from Boda'. It is one of the settings for the Advent Carol "Prepare the Way, O Zion", (Bereden v?g f?r Herran ? Swedish, or Rydd vei for Herrens komme ? Norwegian). These words are typical of the period when they were written and could be updated to suit modern ears, so starting with this excellent melody, some new words would be good from the lyricists amongst you.....This piece is graded in the range 'easy' to 'intermediate' and is well within the capabilities of most bands looking for something different.

    Lisa Lan - Welsh Traditional

Lisa L?n or Fair Lisa is a traditional Welsh folk-song. It is a lover's lament about his lost dead love, Lisa.Lisa L?n is a hauntingly beautiful melody and has been covered by a number of popular artists including Cerys Matthews and Katherine Jenkins. It was used extensively within the soundtrack for Paul Haggis's 2004 film Crash, a tense race relations film set in Los Angeles. This beautiful melody has been superbly arranged for brass band and percussion by Dan Price. Percussion plays a key role in this arrangement and includes, unusually, a part for acoustic guitar or synthesizer.
