Phoenix Butlins Test Piece 2015 - David Holling

Phoenix is a programmatic study depicting the life of the fascinating fictitious bird. The opening is dramatic and yet joyous, followed by the first theme that represents the bird in flight; light in style but relentless all the same. A touch of Latin imposes on a small part of the opening section before returning to the theme once again. The 'Tranquillo' section represents the calm dignity of the bird's fate before the tender slow movement conveys the Phoenix's death with a new theme. This is chance for the soloists to demonstrate musical and technical skill and should be treated interpretively, not mechanically. A fanfare then bursts forth followed by a serious but short fugal section as the Phoenix is reborn. The bird takes flight again in the closing section of music where the melodic content should always be at the forefront of the ensemble.

Vivat! - Score & Parts - Tom Davoren

VIVAT! was commissioned by Kapitol for the 2012 National Championship of Great Britain first section final as a celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The work is split into three contrasting sections that run continuously, with music derived from elements of Parry's coronation anthem I Was Glad. In Memoriam evokes the noble but gentle personality of the Queen's father, George VI. Opening with an atmospheric baritone solo (and later featuring solo horn, flugel, euphonium & solo cornet), the music explores themes of grief, sentimentality and hope. Coronation, a fanfare and subsequent theme, is grandiose in style capturing the spirit and excitement of British pomp and ceremony. The closing Jubilate is a celebration of life and family values, Vivat being the Latin for life or long live. The music passes through moments of tension, virtuosity, humour and jubilance before a finale constructed from connected musical fragments drawn from throughout the work, forming (for the first time) Parry's majestic I was Glad theme.

Wall of Sound - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

This piece was commissioned by Dr Nicholas Childs and Philip Biggs for the National Children’s Band of Great Britain. As the commission was for a youth band, I wanted to compose a piece of music that alluded to the styles and genres of music that are abundant in the current popular music market. However, the National Children’s Band isn’t just any old youth band; they are some of the finest young musicians in Great Britain. So the challenge was to compose a piece that included many popular music styles whilst providing enough of a test to keep the music technically interesting to work on and perform. The driving force behind the whole piece is the percussion section and in particular, the drum kit which is constant throughout. From the start the music is rhythmic and repetitive, similar to many dance tracks. The music begins to slowly unfold and build in texture and at bar 24 the syncopated main theme appears. This theme reappears throughout the piece along with various other motifs and solo lines. The music uses the styles, rock, pop, latin, funk and dance within the score and has a real fun factor about it.There are lots of opportunities for soloists to play and it is marked in the score where to stand and soloists can come out to the front of the stage. I really enjoyed working on this piece and I’m sure performers and audience members will enjoy it too.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

  • Give Me Some Ballroom - Mike Lyons

Cornet Solo. Dedicated to my friend Peter Littlehales. It uses ballroom dance styles to form a 'set'. The soloist has to be very free and improvisatory to get the best out of the music. The opening is quite fanfare like and is followed by a cadenza. The first section is like a minuet, and the main theme is revealed in the solo cornet, which is then given an 'air varie' treatment before moving into Latin dance styles with a dark habanera. The soloist needs to be quite agile and flexible here. The melodic material explores a wide range of pitch. The final section is a tango. Again, the soloist needs to be free and willing to take risks over the rock-steady accompaniment.

The Moody Mallard - Dan Price

Brass Band Solo Series - Grade 5 (Soloist 6) A virtuosic cornet solo by Dan Price. The Moody Mallard is an up-beat solo for cornet and brass band in a Latin-American style. The work is percussive throughout and the opening theme takes inspiration from the mambo whilst the second introduces the stylistic elements that we associate with the tango. There is a haughtiness present in most Latin music which is reminiscent to the persona of many birds but most noticeable in the duck known as the Mallard. To most people, the male or drake is the most recognisable of common ducks with his squat, inverted neck, white collar and glossy green head. Duration: 00:03:45
