    A Redbridge Raga

Put simply, a ‘Raga’ is a scale used in Indian music, but aside from being a series of ascending and descending notes, ragas are also associated with different moods and with particular times of the day or year. A Redbridge Raga is influenced by the use of the ‘Raga Bhairav’ (a morning raga) which is clearly outlined in the mysterious opening of the piece. The following section is much more lively, incoprorating elements of Bhangra (a musical style emanating from the fusion of Indian folk music with British pop culture). The title reflects the location of the first performance that took place at Redbridge Town Hall, East London.Duration: 5:30 minutesPercussion: 3 players playing drum kit, mark tree, suspended cymbal, shaker, tambourine and dhol drum. Grade 3: Medium 1st and 2nd Section Bands

    Alloy

Alloy was originally commissioned in 2009 by Redbridge Music Service as a performance goal for beginner brass instrumentalists who had received free tuition in schools across the borough. The aim of the piece was to provide an inspirational opportunity for beginner players to perform alongside intermediate and advanced level instrumentalists. Alloy is an 8-minute work for metallic instruments, which is reflected in its title. It is a fusion piece with elements from traditional Indian Raga, Drum & Bass grooves, Jazz, Rock and African rhythms alongside the more ‘classical’ melodic brass styles. What culminates is a vibrant and exciting contemporary work. Also included are 4 optional easy beginner brass parts in all keysDuration: 8:00 minutesPercussion: 2 Players playing drum kit and vibraphoneGrade 4: Moderately Difficult 1st Section Bands

    Bass Trombone Concerto

“As a bass trombonist, I spent many years of my adolescence playing in youth orchestras, engaging in musical daydreams. I would visualize myself jumping up from the back of the orchestra to unleash improvisations much to the conductor's horror. The resultant three-movement, thirteen-minute work has enjoyed a robust life with performances by notable orchestras all around the world. Happily, the concerto works well as a recital piece, with many accomplished college players having won concerto competitions performing it. Jazz elements were inescapable, and realizing my old nightmare/dream, quite a bit of the trombone solo is meant to be improvised. I made a recording of the concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was included on a CD called Bach to Brubeck released on Koch International Classics. Having already become popular as a bass trombone work with orchestra accompaniment, renowned British Bass Trombonist and publisher Roger Argente suggested he release a special Brass Band arrangement of my concerto. Roger knew the piece well because years ago he played the European premiere of the concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall.” – Chris BrubeckDuration: 13:00 minutesPercussion: 5 Players playing drum kit, timpani, chimes, high-hat, tambourine, glockenspiel, snare drum, slapstick, suspended cymbal, triangle, xylophone, marimba, tubular bells, crash cymbals, guiro, large gong, maracas, concert bass drum, sand blocks, claves and cowbell. Blue Bombazine

The word Bombazine is derived from the obsolete French word Bombasin. Largely made in the Norwich area, Bombazine is a twilled fabric made of silk used mainly in dress making and popular in England in the reign of Elizabeth I. The image and feel of warm, smooth, opulent silk is aptly suited to a solo feature for tuba. Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs and the RAF Music Service commissioned Blue Bombazine for solo tuba and brass in 2014, for Senior Aircraftman Jonathan Gawn and the RAF Central Band. It was first performed at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, on the 11th April 2015 at the British Festival of Wind Bands. The music is written in the jazz idiom with a testing solo part. It is available with brass band accompaniment or for ten brass with tuba solo.Duration: 5:00 minutesPercussion: Players playing drum kit and vibraphone Grade 5: Difficult Championship and 1st Section Bands

    Fanfares, Marches, Hymns and Finale

“Fanfares, Marches, Hymns and Finale” is a series of self-referential movements, each composed around an attitude expressed in the title rather than for any actual utilitarian use. Hence, it would be difficult to march to most of “Marches”, although it is composed of martial rhythms and associative figures. One could, however, sing the pentatonic (five note) main theme from “Hymns”, which is composed in an American folk-hymn style and set in an Atmosphere evocative of meditation and reflection, although there is no text associated with the themes. “Fanfares” is based upon an opening six-note motif first heard in unison. It precedes and announces the following three movements. As the plural aspect of the title indicates, “fanfares” open and close the movement itself. Needless to say, the spirited “Finale” brings the piece to a close.Duration: 11:00 minutesPercussion: 3 Players playing timpani, snare drum, triangle, suspended cymbal, bass drum and crash cymbalsGrade 6: Very Difficult Championship Section Bands
