Prelude and Liebestod (Tristan) - Wagner, R.

The beginning and end of Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde are two of the most frequently played of the composer's operatic excerpts in orchestral concerts. Following in the footsteps of Alexander Owen who produced an arrangement of the Prelude alone at the turn of the 19th to 20th century, with the capabilities of Bands being now so much further advanced I took up the challenge of a version for our times together with Isolde's broken-hearted Song of Death that closes the opera.Glorious music, that is still 'modern' today in painting the romance of the title characters. Difficult, yes, but rewarding, absolutely.

Procession to the Minster - Wagner, R.

'Procession' was premiAred at the Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert in October 1987, to immediate success. It fits together music from two separate parts of Act 2 of Lohengrin into a single stretch. That it has become the most used finale in modern brass band history, is beyond any doubt, with only the March from the Pines of Rome mounting any real challenge.... although perhaps latterly 'Entry of the Gods into Valhalla' shows every sign of making a run on the post.Brass Band World's TOP CHOICE as a Finale, most played, most enjoyed by audiences and players alike. Again Grades 2 and 3 because it is hard... but everyone wants to play it!

    Spartacus, (Finale) - Khatchaturian, A.

The ballet score contains much well-known music, but this selection is less familiar than much of the score. The story of Spartacus, the slave who attempted the overthrow of Rome and nearly succeeded, is an extraordinary one. Khatchaturian's music is as highly coloured as ever, creating a wave of excitement that builds up in the same manner as Ravel's Bolero.

Submerged Cathedral, The - Debussy, C.

The Breton legend of Ys, and the occasional rising of its cathedral from the waves, gave rise to one of Debussy's most graphic musical impressions. All of the composer's genius for picture painting is used in depicting the watery scene, the majesty of the cathedral rising and then sinking back under the sea.
