71. Purcell Variants - Peter Meechan

Based on Henry Purcell's 'Queen Mary's Funeral Music' this work, in three contrasting movements, was composed for the Black Dyke Band and dedicated to Music Director Nicholas Childs. 1st section test piece at the Butlins Mineworker's Brass Band Festival 2006.
72. Reels and Jigs - Darrol Barry

Reels and Jigs was composed by Darrol Barry especially for David Childs. The title alludes to the musical content of the work but, with tricky rhythms, florid finger work and extended passages in the high register, it is a far cry from a simple reel or jig! It is, however, a great deal of fun and has already proved popular with audiences. Reels and Jigs can be heard on the CD Celtic Charm (CD 24901) on which the performers are David Childs and Cory Band.

This wonderful overture has been a favourite in concert programmes throughout the world and this superbly crafted arrangement for brass band is by Dr. Robert Childs. Music of an extreme virtuosic nature, Russlan and Ludmilla will inject excitement into any concert programme!

A similarity has often drawn between singing and solo instrumental playing. In this beautiful setting of Schubert's most popular song, the solo trombone takes the role of one of the great Lieder singers.

Underscored with rich harmonies, Serenade is a beautifully lyrical solo for soprano cornet. The composer writes, 'this is a simple song in which the soloist should float effortlessly above the band'.
76. Skylines - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Skylines is composed in a funk style with a rigid bass line allowing various soloists to shine. It is composed in a style that many brass band traditionalists won't find stereotypical. That doesn't mean it won't challenge the youth bands who attempt to perform it though!Skylines will test all sections of the band and will provide a great opportunity for ensembles to develop their rhythmic playing, soloistic style and general ensemble skills. It is fresh and different and hopefully enjoyable for bands and audiences alike.
77. Softly, Softly for wind band - Bridget Speigel arr. Ray Farr

'Softly, Softly' was originally composed as the signature tune for a BBC Television series about life on the police force. This superb 'big band style' arrangement works brilliantly for wind band and is a lot of fun with suggested choreography instructions to enhance presentation. The title comes from English saying, "Softly, Softly, catch ye monkey".

This work was commissioned by Colin Duxbury for the Stockport Schools Brass Band as the finale to their programme at the National Youth Brass Band Championships 2000.Duration: c. 8' 00" The music is well within the scope of most bands and is ideal for use as a finale to any concert. There are ample opportunities to showcase the soloists in the band and the piece builds to a rousing finish.

Although in three movements, this work for euphonium and piano only lasts for five minutes in total!I. Allegro Energico is in traditional sonata form with the briefest of codas (two bars!).II. Molto Moderato is a chaconne, a traditional form used by Purcell and Bach.III. Molto Vivace is a short high-spirited rondo which lasts just one minute!
80. Soprano Cornet Solo - Bilitis - Francis Lai arr. Simon Kerwin

Francis Lai is one of France's leading film music composers. His musical styles are very varied, ranging from contemporary jazz to classical. He is one of the pioneers in the creation of synthesiser sounds, samples and the use of 'computer' music. His film music has received awards from all over the world and in 1970 his score for Love Story secured him his only Oscar.Bilitis is a coming of age story centring on the exploits of a young girl during a summer vacation. This expertly crafted arrangement for soprano cornet and brass band is of the film's main title theme.
