81. New York. Brass band (score) - Hess, Nigel

'New York'... or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, this piece needs no explanation. This brass band transcription has been made by Phillip Littlemore and provides a driving and punchy 4 minute work for brass band. 'New York' is the third movement of 'East Coast Pictures', originally written for wind band, commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short ‘pictures’ were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA’s East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. This work has recently been recorded on the CD ‘East Coast Pictures’ by the Leyland Band, conducted by Michael Fowles, and is available from this site (catalogue number: 0-571-52109-6).

Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Nutcracker, is a fairy-ballet in two acts, three tableaux and was composed in 1891/2. It is based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann (1816). Mark Freeh's arrangement is the Tchaikovsky classic arranged a la Big Band!

For centuries, composers have been inspired by the beautiful ‘O magnum mysterium’ text depicting the birth of the new-born King among the lowly animals and shepherds. Morten Lauridsen one of America’s most loved and most performed living composers, and this arrangment is rich in colour, deeply spiritual and intensely moving. This arrangement for brass band has been transcribed by Phillip Littlemore from the original unaccompanied choral setting.

The name John Philip Sousa is no stranger to any brass band aficionado. 'Our Flirtations' has its origins in incidental music written by Sousa for a play of the same name. It was written around 1880, about the time he was appointed Director of the U.S. Marine Band, a position he held until he formed his own civilian band in 1892. Sousa wrote over 130 marches, many of which have been transcribed for brass band. This is a new arrangement by Gary Westwood and can be found on the new recording 'East Coast Pictures' with the Leyland Band (cat. no. 0-571-52109-8) and available on this site.

Carlos Franzetti was born in 1948, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He worked along with Paquito D'Rivera, Joe Farrell, and among other talented artists, composing the soundtracks for Beat Street, Misunderstood, and the Mambo Kings and arranging for the Boston Pops Orchestra, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, and the American Symphony Orchestra.
