There's nothing to match these eight guys on stage with their trumpets, trombones and a wraparound sousaphone, but this recording is punchy and bold, capturing the raw power of their performance. There are songs about Africa, slavery and Aids, but the best is Rakia, a sort of love song about an errant man returning to his wife. Strident, powerful, percussive stuff. Four Stars. --London Evening Standard, 13 February 2009

17. Highlights from the European Brass Band Championships 2008 - Various Artists
Price: £20.49
Stavanger's hosting of the 2008 European Brass Band Championships will long be remembered for a variety of reasons, not least for the warmth of the welcome afforded to the many visitors who travelled there from all over the continent, which was very much in accordance with the 'open port' ethos championed during the city's year as European Capital of Culture. As well as a wonderful festival in which foreign guests were immersed in Nordic culture, above all, the European Championships were a week-long celebration of all that is best in brass, with a line-up of bands, conductors and soloists to rival that of any event on the world's banding calendar, all coming together in a continental blend to whet the appetite of anyone with even the slightest interest in band music. This 2 CD set provides a fitting tribute to a memorable event held in the Norwegian oil capital.

Having dropped the "Brass Band" part of their moniker for their disappointing in 1996, the Dirty Dozen return to their former, fuller-named persona for . And it's a relief. The band is in full bloom from the opening, funk-fueled track, even if the old snare-bass drum marching format gives way to a more standard drum kit for much of the session. With production from John Medeski (he of the vaunted groove outfit Medeski Martin & Wood), the DDBB steps up to blow on a wild array of songs, from "Run Joe," long an item for Louis Jordan, to a feverish read of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues." There's a great balance struck throughout the CD between the old school march-rhythm rave-ups and their more complex compositions that began coming to the fore on the excellent Medeski has the whole party right in your face, too, from virtually the first seconds, when the horns blow brightly and never back off.
